Holding a Master of Education (MEd) in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Mr. Johnstone is a specialist in language learning and acquisition. He has spent ten years working in education with positions in China and the United Kingdom.

The language learning environment at Fettes College Guangzhou Primary School is immersive, interactive and authentic. It is immersive because the use of language goes far beyond an individual English lesson – we are living, existing and being in this English-speaking environment. The environment is interactive as pupils engage individually with the English language through our teachers, classmates and our resources. Finally, it is authentic because we ensure the learning environment reflects authentic language use in social and academic contexts.

The focus of FCG primary school English learning is to equip our learners with the language tools needed to adapt to a variety of academic and social contexts. Our English language teaching does not present the language in isolation, but it is integrated to our academic subjects and our social time. This gives students a wonderful language foundation to build on as they continue with their lives both in and outside of school.

Our lessons are communicative in nature. We have lots of classroom interactions with each student that can often identify areas they haven’t understood and we can help clarify, or we explore a new avenue as a topic or language points comes up organically. This style of teaching is great for relieving pressure from the learners as they are using the language so frequently.
