People are always amazed by the beautiful and neat classroom, and the tidy school-bag storage, every time they walk past our school Grade 1 classroom. How do G1 students make this happen? What strategies do the teachers use to help the pupils? Let's find out.
Cultivating a sense of ownership
One of the values our school promotes is "family". Every student is a member of the Fettesian family and part of the school community. At the beginning of the first grade, the experienced Chinese and foreign class tutors focus on cultivating students' sense of ownership and making each student realize that everything in the class is related to them. If I treat the learning environment with my heart and take an active part in the labour work, my classroom and the corridor outside the classroom will be better. If the classroom becomes dirty and messy, I must treat the classroom with my heart and take care of my "home".
Both Chinese and foreign class tutors patiently demonstrated to Grade 1 students how to do this important work, from packing school supplies, to sharpening pencils, to folding clothes and correcting obvious mistakes with patience. The teachers in the boarding department also give demonstrations and help the boarders with labour work.In the study of the labor skill of folding clothes, the children also explored a variety of techniques.

Let students feel they can master it
Grade 1 teachers understand that in order to encourage the children to like doing labour work, we must let them feel competent and successful for some of the labor tasks. Starting with simple labor tasks, each child gradually mastered the labor skills, accumulated labor experience, and felt "I can do it". This way we believe that the children will slowly fall in love with labor and see the value in it.
Give feedback in time
If students complete the tasks well, the Grade 1 teacher give timely feedback, affirming the efforts of the children and, if there are areas for improvement, the teacher will use an appropriate way to let the child know. The teacher also inspires the child to think: Why did I not do a good job this time? How can I improve next time? Is there anything I need help with?
Home-school cooperation to form synergy
The cultivation of a strong labor ability is not accomplished overnight, nor can it be accomplished only by relying on the school. Grade 1 teachers and parents work in close contact, cooperating with each other and form a synergy. This helps children throughout their daily life to develop labor awareness, labor skills and good labor habits.
